Bathroom Makeover Inspo: Planning Our Design in Canva

We’re back on our demolition bullshit again (not even a week after our massive kitchen renovation reveal), but this time we’re taking on a bathroom makeover. This bathroom is one of two in our house and really needs some love between the peeling plastic tile above the shower and the cracked floor tile.

I would call this a budget-ish renovation because we’re not blowing it out and splurging or rearranging anything, but we are taking on some big upgrades like shower and floor tile.

I would describe the style I’m going for as modern traditional maybe? I always have a hard time zeroing in on describing a style, but think of classic penny tile, a soft greenish gray on the walls, and a beautiful antique dresser-turned-vanity.

Here’s the bathroom makeover moodboard I whipped up in Canva:

Demo Day

This past weekend, Alex demolished the whole room IN ONE DAY. He took off the fiberglass shower surround (which thankfully wasn’t attached to the tub so we could keep the tub in place and save some time and money), he took out the vanity, disconnected the toilet, and tore up the flooring.

We found layers and layers of wallpaper in the room, which was cool – I’m going to save a piece to frame and add somewhere in the house – and at least three layers of floor tile. There was even some tiled baseboard behind the old vanity which, too, was powder blue. It would’ve looked like a Smurf house for sure with blue floor tile and a super blue wallpaper, but I bet whoever installed it decades ago thought it was a vibe and I love that for them.

Once the room was cleared out, we added self leveling concrete to the ground to level it all up for tile (we’ve written a how-to post on using this before), then I took over and added cement board to the shower surround, and tiled the floors.

I love the penny tile, despite Alex saying it’s ‘horrible’ and ‘looks like a snake skin’. We’ve still got to  waterproof and tile the shower, adjust the antique dresser to fit the plumbing inside, paint the walls, and replace the vanity light, but it already looks so much better.
