3 Tips to Make a Small Bathroom Look Bigger
Fun fact: We’ve never had a large bathroom, so between shuffling by each other to brush our teeth at night and keeping all my makeup in a travel bag for easy storage, I’ll take all the tips on how to make a small bathroom look bigger that I can get.
Between hanging your shower curtain a certain way and playing some mind tricks on yourself with window treatments, here are the tips we’ve learned to make do with little house living.

Hang window treatments high and wide
In our most recent bathroom remodel, we did something different that made a much bigger impact than I expected: we outside mounted our favorite bamboo shades. Outside mounting like that means all the natural light possible is coming through, and it means you can add decor or other items to the window sill without window treatments getting in the way. And, it makes the window look so much bigger!
Take the shower curtain to the ceiling
Drawing the eye up with a shower curtain hung to the ceiling makes a huge impact on how tall a room seems. This is especially helpful in houses like ours where the ceilings are only just over eight feet tall. We used this Schoolhouse shower curtain in our most recent remodel and used ceiling rods to hang them. You could also just mount a regular shower curtain rod up really high, but I liked the look of them coming down from the ceiling.
Reducing clutter
Nothing makes a space feel smaller than clutter everywhere, so using as many organizational items and hidden storage like baskets and bins as possible helps show how to make a small bathroom look bigger. Hang your hair dryer inside the vanity door or on the wall, keep toothbrushes corralled in a cute holder, keep the little things like nail clippers, room spray, etc. in little baskets and get cute jars for items like cotton balls. It makes a difference, I swear.
Along the same lines as visual clutter, a bunch of half-used shampoo bottles visible in the shower or on shelves is not the vibe. Putting all the toiletries (at least the everyday items) in cohesive bottles not only gives off spa vibes, but it makes the space feel more put-together.
These bottles are our favorite kind because they look like amber glass but they’re actually plastic!
Having a small bathroom definitely means getting creative with storage and some smoke and mirrors to give the illusion of a bigger room. I don’t know if we’ll ever have the expansive, spa-like bathroom we see in movies, but these tips have definitely helped us cope with the nightly toothbrushing shuffle.
