Bright and Functional Laundry Room Makeover
The beadboard. The wallpaper. The cabinet space. I can’t even pick my favorite part of our laundry room makeover, but I’ll tell you one thing: It’s a lot more fun to be sorting through someone else’s undies in this colorful, functional space than it was in the boring ‘before’ version.
Though the cotton candy-looking insulation snaking down the wall and a dryer that doesn’t stop running but also doesn’t dry the clothes is quite a vibe, I’m glad we’re done with that life. This laundry room makeover took close to five months with a pretty long hiatus where it was half-done (the early stages are in this blog post), but oh man, those finishing touches make such a big difference.

This was my first time using wallpaper after three years of slowly wearing down Alex’s insistent “I will never have that in my house” and this design coupled with the beige and the beadboard is the perfect combo of modern, vintage, not-too-wild but also just-wild-enough.
And if there’s one space to have fun with some color and pattern, it’s the laundry.
This wallpaper is the ‘summer holiday’ design from Photowall (disclosure: they gifted the wallpaper used in this project), and it was the perfect muted citrus watercolor design.

We used mostly stock cabinets from Home Depot for the added storage in the room, but built a base for the bigger utility cabinet and the little bench seat out of 2x4s and some plywood. The paint color used throughout the room is Lentil by Behr and the stain we used was Dark Walnut.
To be totally honest, I loved how the stain looked in the little accent strip of wood across the top of the beadboard and on the little bench, but the butcher block stained terribly.
It could be because it’s just scrap butcher block from another project that probably has all kinds of spills and splatters all over it that impact how evenly it took the stain, but I’m not overly bothered because we’d like to eventually have a sink put in that countertop area if we decide to stay in this home long-term.
The washer and dryer surround is just put together with melamine which was cheap, readily available, and had a similar finish to the stock cabinets which I figured would mean the paint would come out similarly.

To be honest, these before and after photos of the laundry room makeover are what’s going to get me through the last push to be finished with the neverending kitchen renovation happening simultaneously in another part of the house.
In case you were wondering: yes, everything is a complete shambles and yes, there are piles of displaced pantry boxes in random corners of the house.
At least this laundry room makeover is done and we have clean undies.
