Small Home Office Setup Ideas for Maximum Functionality
We recently reconfigured our kids’ bedrooms which finally – after four years of working from home – has given me my very own (small) home office space. It’s amazing what a difference it makes to have a door to close, and I’ve found some pretty game-changing little small home office setup ideas, without being hyperbolic, I might now die without.
Let’s dive in to our favorite small home office setup ideas.

A computer monitor mount
It’s so simple, why had I never thought of this before?? I mount my TV, why can’t I mount my computer?
I bought this computer mount and it turns out most computer monitors have mounting spots in the back and I’ve never noticed because I just assume it needs to stay on the giant T-Rex arm it comes with.
Mounting the monitor has freed up so much space on my small home office desk and my 3pm snackies no longer need to fight for real estate. The dream.
An armless desk chair
Let me tell ya what, my ADHD fidgety self was not made to be shackled to a boring office chair for eight hours a day but I didn’t know there was another option. Then, I started seeing these armless chairs all over TikTok with people saying how much more comfortable they were and I was influenced.
Now let me influence you because those TikTokers were right. I love being able to sit cross-legged and lean and otherwise flail around in many other very non-ergonomic ways as I get through my day.
Cable management
Cable management is the least sexy-sounding small home office hack there is but it’s actually a real game changer. You don’t realize how much the cords are ruining your whole corporate girlie vibe until they are running through a nice little track into a tucked away little box.
I’ve got a couple of the boxes that hide the outlet strips around the house (pro tip: add a command strip to the back of the outlet strip so it doesn’t slide around in the box), and lots of cord covers. There are kind of an overwhelming number of options for these so I rounded a few of my faves up here.
Good lighting
Okay not to be too vain but have you ever logged onto a Zoom meeting and really seen yourself for the first time that day and realized you look like a haggard old witch? I swear these meeting softwares exaggerate the bags under my eyes.
I had a little ring light for a while but the charge lasted like 20 minutes, so I recently bought a new light that you can keep plugged into a charger or your laptop. This way it doesn’t die mid-meeting and your coworkers won’t need to see you do the backward Princess Fiona-to-ogre arc in real time.
A wireless mouse & keyboard
At this point I’m laughing at myself because, yes, so many of these small home office setup ideas are so simple but only a couple of months ago did I upgrade to a wireless mouse and keyboard and phew, what an upgrade it was.
I didn’t realize how annoying those cords running across the desk were until they were gone! Here’s the combo I got.
Note: This set uses a USB to pair with the computer so when I did that I ran out of port space on my laptop so I bought this hub that lets me connect USB, USB-C and an HDMI cord all from one port on my Mac!
Hopefully this little list of my faves has been helpful and makes your office or home more cohesive. I would gladly never work in an office again and now I feel like I finally have my little small home office setup that feels right, I actually like logging on for the day and get so much less distracted. Plus, I have space on my desk for snacks which is always a win.
