The Easiest DIY Composite Fencing Kit
After spending all spring updating our patio space, the worn-out chain link fence in the backyard suddenly became really obvious. It was bringing down the vibe. But not for long, because we just finished installing the Creative Surfaces composite fence kit and it absolutely puts the finishing touch on our outdoor makeover.
The final look is so good and gives us so much privacy to enjoy our new outdoor space. Here’s why we chose DIY composite fencing and how the installation process turned out to be easier than we ever expected.
Side note: This project is sponsored by Creative Surfaces, but this is a full, honest rundown of our experience with the product!

The Benefits of DIY Composite Fencing
First things first, let’s talk about DIY composite fencing. We had a traditional wood fence installed at our last house and some of the slats were warped and discolored within a year which was definitely disappointing, so we were looking for other options in this project.
We’re based in Florida, so we see some pretty harsh conditions between salty air and hurricanes and rain and beating sun, and the idea of a product that wouldn’t warp or crack or rot was pretty appealing! It obviously looks at least 1.5 million times better than a rusty old chain link fence, it’ll never need to be re-stained, it has a 25-year warranty and I also really loved the horizontal style of this fence: it looks so modern and elevated.
We used the color Saddle Brown and as soon as I opened the package in our driveway, I literally said “oooh!”. The graining detail on the slats is also so impressive, it really looks like wood grain.
Easy Installation
To be totally honest, we were pretty intimidated about the idea of building a fence – it just seems like you need to get so many measurements right the first time – but it turns out we really didn’t need to worry. The Creative Surfaces kit comes with super detailed instructions and an easy-to-follow video which I love because I will almost never understand written instructions as much as I will someone just showing me how to do something!
Anyway, here’s how we did it:
- Preparation: We started by removing the old chain link fence along one side of our house (the back neighbors wanted to keep the chain link fence between us to give a double barrier for their pups, so that at least saved us some demo!). We measured and marked the fence line, and marked the post locations with spray paint and stakes.
- Setting the posts: The kit really comes with everything you need and it was packaged in a way that just made sense which is appreciated. After we dug holes with a post hole digger (which was a slog at this time of year), I added some drainage gravel to the bottom, placed the posts and filled them with concrete.
- Installing the panels: This was the fun part and when it all started coming together. The horizontal panels are a tongue-and-groove system so we literally just needed to slide each piece down between the posts until we got to the top, then finish off the section with a post cap.

Final Thoughts
Honestly, I feel like this is the easiest DIY composite fencing kit: we’re amazed at how professional it looks and I really don’t think we could’ve had that kind of result with a traditional wooden fence system. The increased height gives us so much privacy, and our backyard just feels like such a perfect space for our kids to play now.
If you’re on the fence (pun intended) about upgrading your own yard, the Creative Surfaces fence kit exceeded our expectations in every way. The installation was straightforward, the materials are such great quality, and the end result is beautiful.
