Our now-6-year-old always has the best ideas, so when she said she wanted a whimsical fairy garden birthday party this year, I was ready to go all in.

I was thinking toadstools, wood slice decor, tons of streamers, maybe fairy wings for everybody?

But once I started throwing it all on a Pinterest board and adding items to cart, I had the realization – as I’m sure many parents in my position do – that kids parties’ can get out of hand budget-wise pretty quickly.

What I needed was to keep the fairy garden birthday party vibe but with more of a 90s nostalgia kind of budget and setup.

Still, I wanted it to feel like you’d just wandered into a tiny, slightly magical garden that happened to be hosting a birthday party, not like I panic ordered a bunch of plastic decorations two days before and called it a theme.

So, here’s what I pulled together:

The Decor

We just did the party at a public park so really only had one table to work with, but that’s plenty! I used a regular white paper tablecloth and laid out a cute lace/tulle embroidered table runner I found online over the top for the base.

I grabbed a couple of packs of streamers and threw them up with a number balloon (my vision for this was way more aesthetic to be honest but it was a windy day and the streamers kept breaking so I didn’t do many!).

Some of the items we used for the party:

I used a couple of mason jars and old pasta sauce jars to hold some flowers – I used just a few for each jar to make it more whimsical! And my sister brought me some pretty Cosmos from her garden to fill it out, too.

Then really outside of that, I used the food as decor.

The Cake

My Pièce de résistance. Making the cake is my favourite part of hosting a kids’ party and I love baking (even if it turns out a little lopsided), so this fairy garden birthday party was not going to be the time I miss it.

One small little hiccup is the fact we don’t currently have a working kitchen because we’re renovating, so I just bought a few grocery store sponges and worked from there. Honestly kind of an all-the-time mum hack.

I just stacked three cakes, did a crumb coat then piped some brown icing vertically up the sides to make it look like a tree. I took one of the extra blank fairy doors from the party bags that I’d Sharpied brown and stuck it on the front with a bit of buttercream, then piped around that too.

I added some little mushrooms also leftover from the party favors, and some little sprinkle pearl things that I added with a pair of (clean unused!) tweezers. I made some little mushrooms out of pre-coloured fondant I found at the craft store, and added some flowers that I also used as decor.

I also made some cupcakes in addition to the main cake because I wanted to have a gluten-free option, and also I had no idea how many people were coming because I was getting a lot of last-minute RSVPs. Is that a thing now?

Anyway, the cupcakes are just from a box mix, then I piped on some green buttercream into leaf-y shapes. I don’t know, I kind of winged it with this cake decorating kit I bought ages ago.

The Food

Again, because of the no kitchen life, the food was pretty simple. I did a bowl of cut-up berries, some mini pancakes (just using pancake shake) with a bowl of syrup, some fairy bread cut into butterfly shapes, and a veggie tray.

If you learn one thing from this blog post, let it be that cookie cutters can do like 80% of the heavy lifting for a more whimsical birthday party. Cut up cheese slices, cucumber, fruit, sandwiches, whatever into an on-theme shape and you’re golden.

The Party Bags

I was actually so proud of the party bags for this fairy garden birthday party! I personally hate when kids get party bags filled with plastic crap and candy so I wanted to go for something a bit more wholesome, memorable and hopefully actually useful.

The idea was a fairy garden starter kit, so I used some plastic cookie bags (like the individual sized ones with the adhesive strip on the back), and filled them with a blank fairy door to decorate later, a couple of little faux mushrooms (that came in a pack of about 30 from the craft store), and a pack of wildflower seeds I picked up for like $1 or $2 a piece at the hardware store.

The Activities

I bought a bulk pack of flower crowns online that I set out for everyone to grab and wear during the party then take home after. I also got a pack of blank fairy wands and some markers and gems so they could decorate their own fairy wand at the party. Easy peasy!

I feel like this was a hit for sure, but also having a party at a playground is A+ for the built-in activity situation.

Final Thoughts

This fairy garden birthday party wasn’t zero effort, but it also wasn’t overwhelming. Basically just one table, simple food, and a few thoughtful details. Our little fairy loved it, we stretched the budget and still stayed on theme. Wins all around.
