Note: We were provided Fusion Mineral Paint for this project by Goggins Creations, but our opinions on it are totally our own.
I’m not even joking when I say I keep casually walking by the kitchen to sneak a peek at the dining bench I just built. If you didn’t catch the plans, I wrote them out here, but it is a hefty beast and is going to add so much storage and function to this room once we build or buy a dining table to go along with it.
Once I got towards the end of the bench build, I was getting antsy to start using my new favorite furniture paint but I kept having silly little mistakes or extra steps I didn’t account for and it took me what felt like forever to finally get to painting.
Then I forgot I needed to cut out the spot for my recessed outlet. Then I needed two coats of primer. And then I needed sanding. And so it went on.
Obviously I finally got there, and it was totally worth the wait. Danielle from Goggins Creations reached out to us a while ago about trying out Fusion Mineral Paint and we’re so glad because this paint is beautiful.
We were choosing between the deep green color Bayberry and the deep navy Midnight Blue and this was before we’d even moved to the new house if that gives any indication on how long I’d seen this built in breakfast nook vision in my head!
Ultimately, we obviously chose Midnight Blue and it looks amazing with the brass hardware we ended up adding on the bench as well.
So, onto the reasons we love this paint for furniture more than traditional paint.

The coverage
The coverage! I had read about how good Fusion’s coverage is but, ya know, every paint company says something similar. Once I started painting though, it just kept going. Like, I’d fill up my roller and be able to get through like a third of the bench with just one small tray’s worth of paint, and it went on really smooth. After two coats over the whole bench in all the nooks and crannies, I used exactly one pint which is insane if you think about how much normal paint I probably would’ve gone through.
It requires little prep
It was a bit different for us because we were doing a new build, but normally this type of paint requires hardly any prep before you get going. If you’ve ever refinished furniture before, you’ll know how tedious it is to sand down or prime or strip the previous finish, but Danielle sent us a handy little sheet on what kind of steps you need to take before each surface and the most labor-intensive was giving a quick sand.
Like I said, since we were building furniture out of raw wood, I did a couple coats of primer just to be sure all the paint wouldn’t get soaked up in the wood, but for a regular furniture makeover you wouldn’t need to.
It’s waterproof
Last week my 8-month-old decided to dump her entire bowl of cut-up avocado onto the floor where she was eating, so yeah, the waterproof element was important to us. I generally am not a fan of shiny sheens in regular paint like satin or semi-gloss, but I feel like you need to choose them to have a cleanable surface. I love that the Fusion paint looks matte but is easy to clean. I will say it shows a few scuff marks being that it’s such a dark color, but it’s easy to wipe down and get clean again.
We really need to address our horrendous cavernous bathroom hopefully sometime soon, and I’m considering using the Fusion paints again for that job because I’d bet something like a bathroom vanity is perfect for this kind of paint.
We actually have a whole pint leftover that we’re going to use on our eventual kitchen island so it matches the bench and I’m already so excited for how it turns out. This blue is such a nice color – it’s hard to describe because I’m terrible at describing things, but it’s almost, like creamy? I’m not sure if you say that about any colors other than white but here I am, saying it.
I’m just obsessed with how the whole project turned out and I’m so proud of myself for trying something new and intimidating (and sticking with it during that inevitable stage of ‘ihatethissomuchimquitting’).
